    Far from it

Unfortunatley not a great shot ... or at least it doesnt appear to be so at this low res. The issue is primarily the vignette which adds nothing and actually distracts. The idea and this type of image works really well when its done well but this one jsut doesnt feel spot on.

It's certainly far from a bad shot ... and it is very evocative in many ways but Id like to see this larger and without the vignette. Of course it may be the case that the vignette wasnt added and could be natural however it appears fake either way.

Thanks for the comments and votes people .. this was from a while back. She is a great girl Dave and does sometimes appear on other portfolios on here ... as she is based in Wales I dont get the chance to shoot her as often as I would like.

This is a bit of a trciky one to critique in some ways as I actually quite like it ... love the poses of the kids, and the overall shot in many ways but whilst I can see what you were aiming for ... I feel the yellow acid face just fights a touch too much for attention.

It's not just the big splash of colour but also the composition here. If it were in the top right or left and had been used to create a diagonal across the frame then it might have been a touch more subtle. Also I'd have liked to have seen the top of the head of the girl in the centre not breaking the outline of the circle above her.

The expressions and fun displayed in the shot are great.

The other issue here is that the kids have different toned tops on .. not always an issue but when you are shooting balck tops onto black backgrounds there is the tendency to get blocks of black .. which doesn't look good generally. So ... a few tweaks and you would get a better shot but it's certainly not a disaster as it stands.

    Hope that helps.

Great idea and concept .. love the camera angle but the shape in the foreground is just too bright. For this type of shot to be truly effective it really needs to retain the detail in there ... in all honesty I'd bin this one and go back out there and re-do it. I apprecia\te it can be tricky with the exopsures here but keeping the 9 minutes in similar light and running with a bit less flash and torch work would do the trick. Would be nice to use some ground markings to keep some additional seperation between the strands of light too .. making it a bit more uniform.

I think a polished version of this would be great.

Excellent image and well worthy of a click. Despite some of the minor niggles this is superb. LAndscape photography is all about the light and in this capture you have certainly managed to show that off to its full extent.

This one does need the crop to remove that top left but the lighting is pretty good. The flash to the right is a touch too high which has left the left (our) in shadow a touch more than desired. The detail on the jacket is excellent and the left flash positioned accurately.

Despite looking like 2 flash units this was 3 as I recall and that extra light has just given a bit more separation on the right shoulder which was needed.

I'd crop into the hair here land take a strip of the left to rmeove that bright patch without going to close to the eyes. Still worthy of a click as with a few tweaks it could be significantly improved.

  • Just spent a very enjoyable 20 minutes browsing the images on your website. Some really good work on there and a pleasure to view ... agree that its quite hard to place your work into a genre and thats probably the reason I like it so much ...

Shame you dont post some of your more thought provoking work on here too though.

  • One of the best landscape photographers on the site in terms of technique and processing. I always enjoy viewing your work which is inevitably very beautiful. Always pleased to see your willingness to experiment compositionally too.

  • A commentless portfolio .. not a good thing!! So here goes ... some interesting and diverse ideas in here .. let down slightly by technique rather than creativity. Some interesting concepts that with a bit of development would prove fruitful!!! A very strong foundation on which to build your photographic skill ... Dan
