Polyphemus Moth Resting

By Daisymaye
Well, now I'm a bit confused. Alan, whatriveristhis, says a moth rests with it's wings spread and a butterfly with it's wings closed. This is how I first found this moth, with it's wings closed. Then it dropped off, onto the ground and then flew to the rose garden. Where the last 2 shots were taken.

Thanks so much to CarolG, Sue118, Rayme330, digital_boi, franken and Lillian for their wonderful UA's. I was totally amazed at the reaction to this moth.

Two lovely shots of this huge beauty.

Alan must be wrong, the Clouded Yellow that I captured in my last post always rests with closed wings. Moths and butterflies are all Lepidoptera when all's said and done.

Some moths, including Geometrids, rest with wings closed, just as some butterflies (mainly Riodininae ) rest with wings open. What I suggested was just a quick rule of thumb that applies more often than not. I think there may be more moths that are exceptions to that rule than butterflies, but I'm not certain. Another difference is that moths tend to have feathery antennae and thicker bodies. Taxonomically though there's no real difference... as LynneJoyce says, they're both classified the same.

Could be wings open when facing the sky to soak up light/sun? And closed when clinging to verticals? Just guessing.

The detail and clarity in these two shots are stunning, Sandy. V1 is especially amazing.
