They certainly do love that tree judging by the amount of holes in it. They are doing a good job of consuming the wood boring insects though so maybe they are actually saving the tree.

They've given the bark some really nice design there. The tree will disagree, that's for sure.

Having a wooden house, which receives the same attention from these birds I do my best to scare them away. I am forever using wood filler to fill in the holes which sometimes have been as much as 2 inches in diameter. They make look nice but they are pests.
