meet Swallow!

By CarolG
I found this handsome chappie chomping on a stem of wild fennel in the meadow, I took some images and then decided to see if I could raise a swallowtail butterfly from him. So home he came, with a fistful of fennel flowers and stems, and was popped into a large jam jar. He fed and pooped for about three days, then nothing. Slowly he attached himself to a thick twig, yesterday he shed his skin, and this morning he is a fully fledged chrysalis! I donít know whether he will emerge this year or next, depending on the temperature here, but if he is going to emerge this year, then hopefully I should have something to report to you in about 10-12 days. Watch this space! V.5 shows the condition he is in now.

Oh Carol............ I did this once when I was about 12, It was one of those fat hairy catterpillars, It emerged as a Red admiral or something similar (not too sure on butterfly names), I set it free after I found it flying around the room, I was so pleased that it hatched out.
Please let us know what happens, good luckGrin

Great pics as usual Carol and you show great dedication.
As a child I did a similar thing with some tiny caterpillars in a web on a privet bush.I was very disappointed when they hatched into small moths silver with dots!!
Size is important in this case ,usually the bigger the caterpillar the bigger the moth!!
Best wishes Robert, from a miserable wet UK.
