Keep your hair on

By dathersmith
OK, I've got no new landscape images processed at the moment, although there are a few waiting quietly on the HD, so I thought I'd upload a portrait.

A couple of weeks ago a local hairdressers was putting on a show and I was asked to go and take some photo's. This is one of the first ones, taken in the salon just as the girl had her hair finished (including the nails). Taken handheld with a speedlight in my other hand held up to the left. Thought it would make a nice mono so gave it a go.

Not my usual thing so comments would be more appreciated than ever.

Darren.

PS. Go large to see the nails.

Works well in mono - like the details and tones too.

Nicely framed and converted, Darren. Crisply focussed, too!

I think perhaps a white-point adjustment in levels may help with the tonality as it seems lacking a little contrast - especially with the whites (or should I say greys!! Wink ) of her eyes.

This all could be rubbish, of course, as I'm at work with an uncalibrated monitor.

Cheers

Thanks for the comments guys.

You could be right Bill as it looks the same here but I'm at work too. I processed this a while ago and had it in my pocket on a memory stick so can't really remember how it looked at home. Will revisit it tonight if I get a moment.

I think that Bill has made a fair comment Darren and I would agree with him, however I still think that this is a great shot and one to be very pleased with Smile

Thanks Tony. I must say I am pleased with the image but will follow Bills advice and process it further. As it happens I'm taking a selection to the salon tonight so hope she's pleased with them.

This is a good portrait but I agree that the skin tones are rather muddy. Just as a matter of interest I downloaded the image and did a levels adjustment - just pulling the RH slider in a bit towards the middle - and felt that there was a big improvement. I would also consider cloning out that lettering on her T-shirt. It is well worth doing as this is a good image. Andy

Cheers Andy, wish I'd selected to allow modifications now (something I always forget). I thought about the lettering on her T-shirt but thought it would be too difficult behind her hair, suppose I could leave that bit though?

Thanks for the comments Yung, Dave and Sarah, appreciated. I've quite a few colour shots that I'm happy with too, maybe I'll give them an airing over the next day or so.

She's a very nice girl Mike, the hair and nails was connected to the theme (I hope Wink )

A lovely portrait, Darren, but V1 looks a bit dark and lacking punch (maybe it's the bright sunshine on my screen!), V2 for me.

I think V1 is quite fab as a portrait but was gonna make a comment about the hair and nails not being prominent then saw V2 and it all came to light.
Well done Darren, wouldn't get me trying owt like that, too scared!

It's good to get out of your comfort zone sometimes John and I actually quite enjoyed it and have agreed to photograph the next one for them.
