End Of An Era

By Dave_Collier
Not my usual style of work, but yesterday saw the final mission to be flown by these venerable antique noise generators and an end to use world wide. The two last aircraft are due to be placed in museums in Leicestershire and Surrey.

For nine years of my RAF career I worked on these aircraft in the maintenance base, initially replacing the landing gear as part of scheduled maintenance, and towards the end of my time in the RAF developing a part of a maintenance management system to support an increasingly heavy workload to keep these aircraft in the air.

VC10 K2 air to air refuelling tanker aircraft of 101 Squadron Royal Air Force taken in the 1980s at Brize Norton. This aircraft was originally a civilian airliner and was converted for military use when these aircraft were withdrawn from civil use due to increasing noise regulations at civil airports.

Well worth a salute to somethign that has, in my lifetime, gone from glamorous newcomer to old stager.

May they be revered in retirement.

3 years at Brize Norton. They were probably the most graceful looking RAF aircraft, but also one of the noisiest. I loved them Grin

During my 24 years in the RN we "chatted" to these guys on many occasions, and being a Leicester lad at heart am gld to see one going there.

Nice one Dave.
I flew many aeromeds on this beautiful aircraft. End of a era, and proud to have worked on them

Nice to see Dave.I went to Bruntingthorpe to see the first ones come in for their funerals.I felt very touched to be honest.Within 1 hour panels were off etc etc.I was glad to be part of their life though.
