The more I look at this shot the more I become convinced that this plane should have been killed on the drawing board. The Fairey Rotodyne tried to combine helicopter and airplane in the 50s and demonstrated the problems with the concept. I suspect if this had not been a military project (with taxpayers funding the costs) then it would have been scrapped years ago.

Still, it is a fantastic shot with great details showing the complexity of the machine and the ingenuity of the designers.

$35.6 billion project/development cost $72 million unit cost.... I agree it wouldn't have survived the drawing board outside of the military - but as a special forces delivery vehicle I guess the powers that be can justify such extraordinary expenditure...
