Weird Nightmare

By DaveMead
Weird nightmare
You haunt my every dream
Weird nightmare
Tell me what's your scheme?

Hi Folks,
Thanks to those who voted and/or commented on 'Swaledale Ewe', much appreciated, as always. It was an image I was particularly proud of and it is somewhat frustrating that ever so many people looked at it and then moved on without commenting on why they didn't like it or what they didn't like about it. Whereas I enjoy the ego boost that a hatful of votes gives, animal portraits (in monochrome at that) are not my usual fare and I had hoped for some good, honest critique. Oh well..............
A couple of weeks ago, a secret informer on this site sent me a PM saying that the bluebells in Newton Wood on the lower slopes of Roseberry Topping were at their best. The very next evening, steviehutch and I set out on what turned out to be the weirdest, most unpleasant photography trip I have ever experienced. Steve is great company, the bluebells were superb and the light (at least for a while) was fantastic. However, when we reached the location of Joe Cornish's famous image of said bluebells, the place was literally crawling with other togs. There were at least 30 of them, busily flattening the very flowers they had come to photograph whilst getting in each other's way and talking complete cowdung. The biggest laugh of all is that Jc's composition no longer really works as the trees have matured in the years since he took it, forming a barrier rather than allowing the eye to wander through the picture. I soon retreated from this weird nightmare, a scene out of 'Photography Hell', further up the hill to attempt my own compositions, one of which is above. I am glad I saw the bluebells, undoubtably the best I've ever seen, but if I ever return at this time of year, it will be without a camera so as not to be associated with the rampaging hoards, damaging the landscape with their lack of imagination and sheep-like mentality.
Have a great evening and thanks for dropping by.
P.S. Lyrics from 'Weird Nightmare' by the late, great Charles Mingus.

I like your shot of the bluebells - pity about the thundering herd you had to contend with. A

Superb image and so great to see such a concentrated carpet of bluebells in the open rather than on the forest floor. Interesting to read your narrative and how so many were attracted to the scene, yet damage what they had come to capture.

Nice capture. Don't know whether it's the monitor, but there seems to be a magenta hue to the image. I live 10 mins from here so went out after the heavy downpours from a couple of weeks ago as I knew not many togs would be there, got a similar image and some on other side of fence. Definately the best they've been for many years, shame about the other togs trampling all over.

Interesting observation Dave but a wonderful image of this iconic location ..... metal note to myself to avoid it at bluebell time unless like you and look for a new viewpoint Smile

Lovely light and colour /tones captured here Dave . When I went there were at first 2 other togs with large format cameras . Then about another 6 or 8 arrived from a near by camera club . The bluebells had been well trampled in some areas . Totally unbelievable that people are so careless ....Phil

So beautifully lit, and such a great pov leading the eye throught the blue bells and on to the distance, and the pretty sky to top it.

enjoyed the story - told from the heart too
