Steetley Pier

By DaveRyder
2nd day of the wooden Steetley Pier. A wider view, some 10-15ft back, from yesterdays upload.
The pier has been cut to restrict access and I do wonder how long before someone has the bright idea to remove it.

I tried a few sky replacements that just didn't work.
Affinity and Nik to the rescue and what I feel is a nicely balanced image.

Comments and thoughts welcomed as always.

Love the composition. The light and tones say flat overcast sky, a replacement sky would risk looking phoney. But there are white 'windows' left and right, without any sign of cloud streaks, they look a bit odd.

I think I like this one even better than the one before!
Great work!

Moira,
You are spot on with the sky replacements I tried - none worked except a milky way one. While still looking fake it had some appeal.
The 'arcs' in the sky came out after applying the Nik filter (a high contrast one) but I though they framed the structure so didn't back them out.

Great view here Dave, I think if you had replaced the sky it would have looked very wrong.
I am seeing quite a bit of banding in the sky as it is though, probably the 'arcs' you have mentioned above.

Oddly, the level of the sea in the middle is different to the sea at both sides?

I altered it in the mod, and for the first time tried sky replacement using Photo-shop 2021. Theres not a lot of sky templates there so I used a darkish one. Seems to work reasonable well.

I feel the need for more 'body' to the picture: it's a solid, heavy structure, not fadingly ethereal, so I pulled the shadows down in Levels.

John, I must be improving... I came to the same conclusion after uploading and earlier today added a variant to my page, re-edited in Luminar with the enhance tool;

Thanks for the mods;

Willy - the sea level is the same across the image. The perception in the 'tunnel' bit is where the shaded area of the pier starts.
Like the sky 'arcs' it was exaggerated in the edit.

If I draw a line across Dave, the middle is quite a bit lower?

Willie,
The sun was creating a very shaded are inside the tunnel of the wooden trellis.
If you enlarge the small triangle at the end of the tunnel (a lot, really a lot) there is the dark sea area to the bottom of the wooden trellises, then the area above has two sections (not that distinct...) The transition is about halfway up the diagonals of the triangle.

I not quite able to alter sea levels yet. Smile

I did a quick mod to try and help the banding in the sky. I have to admit to replacing it as I couldn't sort the banding out.
I can see where Willie is coming from, I think it may be the water breaking around the posts that is showing as a white 'horizon'.

Super shot Dave. On my screen (iMac retina 27") I can just see the transition you mention, I do like also your and John's (dudler's) stronger mods and Janet's (chase) replacement sky which is an excellent match.

I'm glad that you've explored the same avenue, Dave!

My aim would be to get there with minimal editing...
