Collared Kingfisher

By Davesumner
This wild Collared Kingfisher was photographed at Toronga Western Plains Zoo at Dubbo NSW in a monkey enclosure. The bird was on a branch in darker undergrowth and about 40 mtrs away. Unfortunately, I couldn't get any closer and I didn't take my tripod because it was a hot 42 degree day and the sun was bright and I didn't think I'd need it so I had to use ISO 1600 to capture this shot which has been cropped heavily to isolate the bird. I just could not get a sharp shot and the best shutter speed I could manage without upping the ISO was around 1/30th which at 400mm and 40 mtrs for what is a small subject isn't easy. The bird has its mouth open which I think it is doing to try and keep cool.

Anyway I managed a shot of this quite rare bird and I'm reasonably happy with what I got given the circumstances.

Thanks for looking

Dave

Annette,

Not sure how accurate the colours are as I had to use the fill light slider quite extensively just to get any light on the bird at all.
