Hornet (I Think)

By Davesumner
This insect was taken on the banks of Birdsland Lake near Upwey in Victoria, Australia. I think it is some type of Hornet but someone out there may be able to identify it better than I can.

I took this because it looked like it was on the runway waiting to take off and I was pleased with the results as it was taken hand held.

If it were in the UK I'd say it was a Hover Fly - you've caught it brilliantly. I like the diagonal composition and the out of focus background.

I have researched this and found out that a fly has two wings as in my image but any other flying insect such as bees and dragonflies have four wings.

Therefore the conclusion is that this is a hoverfly.

Thanks for the nice comments.
