Tawny Frogmouths - We Are Not Owls

By Davesumner
This is a Tawny Frogmouth and two chicks taken at Oakleigh GC in Melbourne. Found in all of Australia and Tasmania, these birds are commonly mistaken by the Australian population to be owls but they are actually more like Nightjars than Owls. They nest on a few sticks and goodness knows how they all balance on that small branch. They are night feeders and generally sleep and lounge around during the day emerging at night to feed on insects and small mammals. They have a unique pose that resembles a broken branch which allows them to sit and wait for their prey to come along.

Thanks for looking and I hope you like the shot.
