The Naga Sadhus are worshipers of Lord Shiva and normally do not wear clothes.They are categorized in Akharas, just like regiments in an army. They hold sticks,spears,swords and trident as a symbol of their identity.

The covering in ash is also an act of worship I believe? In goa, there is a large scuplture of Shiva in the rock at little vagator, & a trident (shiva symbol) has been cemented inmto the rock.
