My first Great Tit

By Dee_licious1
I finaly got one Wooo Hooo!

Chris and I went to Coombe Abbey on Sat afternoon - very dull and very windy and had a good time in the bird hide (oh behave!), even saw a tiny deer come up to the bird table! Anyway, the light was bad and the pics were poor. Woke up Sunday to bright clear skies so went back in the morning. Neither of us had managed to find anywhere we could be comfortable enough to sit and wait for birds so this was ideal. Only our second session and we hoped we had learnt from the previous days attempts. Still made a few mistakes on my settings but as I was changing settings as I went along I managed to get some nice shots - this is one of them.

Settings: 300mm, F6, 1/500 sec, ISO 1600

Post Production: Added a green filter to the background, reduced noise (median filter), lightened the bird slightly, added saturation to the branch/tree stump then slight USM on bird and stump.

Thank you for looking at my first serious attemp at bird photography.

Big is available if you wish to view that.

Dee

Thanks everyone. Is something I have always wanted to try my hand at but just never managed.

I forgot to say that the focus was done manually - found auto took way too long (and is noisey). Think I will keep experimenting with my settings until I get it spot on!

Thanks for that Keith, coming from you thats a compliment. Need to go back and practice though, need to lower the ISO for starters and reckon I can slow the shutter speed down to about 100 which should mean I can get down to F4 or thereabouts. The manual focusing is what is slowing me down though, I just pick the branch, focus on that and then don't have to make any large adjustments when a friendly bird hops on for a quick breather!

Thanks guys, but yes, it is my first attempt at capturing birds - oh wait, we tried first on Saturday afternoon but failed in that the quality was rubbish - pics too dark and too much noise to do anything with them so went back Sunday morning - nice bright light and much better results - well, good enough to PhotoShop! Next time should be even better - with less to do in PS.

Thanks Greg, sounded complicated though Smile

Will remember to take a more critical look at my work before uploading - although I am still pleased with my result - especially if you look at the original pic - really low quality. Will upload it in five mins.
