This is the entrance to what is sometimes called Auschwitz 2 or more commonly known as Birkenau.

This image shows the entrance to the camp where the trains passed through the building to disgorge their sad load for selection. Over a million people are thought to have past under this arch. They were split into those who were deemed fit to work and those who were to be sent straight to the gas chambers.

When I was in Auschwitz itself I felt the horrors of what was done at that place. When I came here to Birkenau it made me realise the sheer scale of what was done to all those poor people. The camp covers a total of 420 acres and in 1944 it contained a total of 100,000 prisoners.

A picture that young people should see that the horrible things that were done there never be allowed to happen again. A superb emotional and also frightening reminder.

an extremely emotive image, the train tracks as your lead in is exceptionally strong and adds so much raw feeling. Outstanding.

Hi All

Thanks for your comments & votes.
I must admit that I thought of putting the B&W image first but then I thought that those unfortunate people who past through the gates saw it in colour and it would not have changed much since that time. Had the Russians filmed (or photographed) the horrors of what they saw in colour I don't know if that would be the accepted norm.

Thanks again

3 very compelling images which convey the feeling that you are being led right up to the gateway to the camp. Well worth the RC and worthy of many more clicks too.
