Lavender Field, Shoreham, Kent

By derekhansen
On impulse I decided to set the alarm for 4am this morning. An hour later I was standing on the edge of this field and congratulating myself on my good fortune.
I have been shooting this field when the Lavender is in bloom for a number of years but this is the first attempt to capture it in the morning. I had always been concerned that the row of poplar trees behind me would throw too much shadow. In the end the shadows worked in my favour, diffusing the early morning sun.
I took quite a few images including one or two long exposures. This one saw the shutter open for nearly a minute. Its a single exposure (no image blending) using a 3 stop hard grad and the Lee big stopper.

Love the convergence dark and light "rays". They move my eye through the field, down the slope and over the hill. This is magnificent!

The distant yellow fields and morning light made it extra special Derek.
Unfortunately I am back in Vietnam now and so can't visit.
Have a great summer.

That's a cracker. Superb lighting & well captured.
Must have been a very still morning, no blurring of the lavender heads even with a minute exposure.

Thank you for your award.

Actually there is a little blurring on some of the heads which is more visible on the High Res version. To be honest I wasn't too concerned about the lavender blurring as I quite like that a sense of movement. However the ridge at the horizon and the trees to the rear and right hand side did a pretty good job of shielding the lavender so it remained very still. What was nice was that I could see the clouds were moving quite swiftly which I knew would work well on a long exposure.

Can I also say thank you to Malcolm and Brian for their awards.
