I purchased a Tamron AF 70-300mm f4.0-5.6 Di LD Macro Zoom Lens with Built In Motor for Nikon late in 2010 as an upgrade for the telephoto capability I had with a Nikkor 55-200mm lens. What I like about the Tamron AF 70-300mm was the added 100mm in focal length, and the incorporated motor built into the lens itself, which gave it the capability to auto focus with all Nikon DSLR cameras (including the D40 and D40x). I have found lenses with the motor built into the lens to provide focusing quiet and responsive.

One of the principal concerns I had about the Tamron 70-300mm lens was not the 20mm gap between it and the Sigma 18-50mm I have - rather it was the lack of VR (Vibration Reduction) or OS (Optical Stabilization) being built into this 70-300mm lens. I have discovered that VR/OS is a must have above 100mm with this lens. Stopping down the lens still produced less clarity and sharpness than I desired in images (even using a tripod). That being said I have decided to unload the Tamron 70-300mm lens, and acquire a Sigma 50-200mm lens - with OS.

Just ordered a Sigma 50-200mm f/4-5.6 DC OS HSM - which is a compact, high-performance telephoto zoom lens. It utilizes Sigma's Optical Stabilizer technology to eliminate the effects of camera shake so subjects can be easily and clearly seen in the cameras viewfinder in addition to the image. I have had quite a bit of experience using the Sigma 18-50mm with OS, and am quite pleased with the OS capability Sigma has (even without a tripod). I have read that this Sigma 50-200mm lens will allow the use of shutter speeds up to 4 stops slower than normal for steady, handheld photography.

** By the way the list price for this lens is $380 - ordered it (new) online for $159 (saved $221)...
