Pitt Rivers Museum

By DiegoDesigns
The Pitt Rivers Museum was founded in 1884 when Lieutenant-General Pitt Rivers, an influential figure in the development of archaeology and evolutionary anthropology, gave his collection to the University of Oxford. His two conditions were that a museum was built to house it and that someone should be appointed to lecture in anthropology.

The Museum displays archaeological and ethnographic objects from all parts of the world. The General's founding gift contained more than 18,000 objects but there are now over half a million! Many were donated by early anthropologists and explorers. The extensive photographic and sound archives contain early records of great importance. Today the Museum is an active teaching department of the University of Oxford. It also continues to collect through donations, bequests, special purchases and through its students, in the course of their fieldwork.

I would have liked to have spent a whole weekend in this place alone, it was simply marvellous and if you're in the Oxford area, I'd recommend adding it to your itinerary. This is a composite of a couple of images I shot whilst there, I hope you like the result and thanks for looking in.

This does look good. The colours, composition and the artistic intervention all work spectacularly well... and it really comes to life (ho ho) large.

Nicely done. The combination is very effective and the slightly muted tones of the butterfly fit well with the bones.

Many thanks for all the encouraging comments you've made on this, I'm delighted with the response as I wasn't too sure how it would go. The museum was so full of amazing things, it was difficult to decide how best to represent it, so I'm really pleased this has gone down well. Cheers all and have a good weekend... Dave
