St Helen's Church in the Kingdom of Heaven

By DiegoDesigns
This image was captured during the same trip as the Lundy Lighthouse. It's a shot of St Helens on Lundy, which at one time was known as the 'Kingdom of Heaven'.

From around AD 1150, Lundy was owned by the Marisco family. In 1244, Henry III built the castle, having seized the land and executed William de Marisco for treason; the castle today, looking out over magnificent views into the Bristol Channel, is built on the original site. Lundy was a notorious pirate lair, especially in the 16th century when the Elizabethan Admiral Sir Richard Grenville owned the land. Not until the 19th century did Lundy finally become respectable, when the Reverend Hudson Heaven built the Church of St Helen, and the island became known as the Kingdom of Heaven.

I love pictures like this with information. Whenever I post one I get comments about the horizon not being straight. I did wonder.
