This is really good Ian. Composition and focusing are good although I might have been tempted to dodge the highlight in the eye for more effect.
By View digicammad's Portfoliodigicammad At 07:51AM - 04 Dec 2004
Thanks folks. Boyd, if you compare it with the previous version you will see it has been dodged a little. :0) I tried it a bit further and it looked unnatural, after all it was a very grey day. Cheers for the suggestion though.

-ve: Can't see anything!

Reckon this is a more effective comp (tho' still like yesterday's as an alternate!) √ΜΛЯΚ

I prefer this crop, but the magnification has hightened the fact the wing isn't sharp. Was that subject movement? The leg and face seem fine. Shame, because otherwise it's excellent.
By View digicammad's Portfoliodigicammad At 08:39AM - 04 Dec 2004
Oh sod it, I thought this was destined to be an EC! lol. I'm not sure why the wing is slightly soft Pete, it looks like it may have been just settling its' feathers a touch. Oh well, try again.

Thanks for the comments folks. This is the 3rd version, I had to repost the second one after our esteemed editor noticed a slight movement blur on the wing feathers. I think I have corrected it in this one. No chance of an EC now though, Pete must be fed up of seeing it. lol

Thanks Lauren. Maybe I'll wait until tomorrow before doing another version. lol. I can see what you mean, I think I was still seeing the frame there although it has now been cropped. Just shows it's difficult sometimes to see beyond your own memory of a shot.

Hi Ian really nice shot the bird and background are very well exposed sometimes the white of the subject can be to much of a contrast against the black b/ground this shot the bird seems to gently appear from the shadows you can almost feel the softness of it's feathers very nice shot.

Thanks again for the comments everybody.

A Booth - I have (yet) another version without the black on the right. It gives a different feel but I don't think I have a preference between the 2. As this is already v3 I don't think I'll bore ePz with any more, especially as opinion on the space seems to be divided. :0)

bppowell - The owl was on a window in an unlit barn, so the black background in natural in this case.

Great image Ian. I'm in two minds about the composition as it breaks the 'rule' of leaving space for your subject to look towards. On the other hand, I like the slight edginess that this brings to the shot.

Thanks John, I have some noise fixing software but are you saying you think this one needs it?

Dave, I think the reason it can break the rule is because it is only the head looking out of frame, the rest of the posture is pointing towards the space.

Thanks for your comments everybody.

A well deserved HC, Ian. The contrast of the black background and the owl's white feathers works really well.

I was lucky to see three wild barn owls hunting on a small stretch of motorway embankement at 4am a few weeks back. It looked like they were using the streetlights to help them see their prey in the grass. They would periodically hover over the grass then land on the barriers. Guess what? That's right, no camera! Wonderful bird.

Watcha Ian,
like this, good composition and the colours are perfect, guddun.
Thanks for the comment on bullrush, had a go and reposted. It has given some extra detail and sharpness in the lights but that seems to be at the expense of the darks. All that doesn't matter though, these werwe very bad shots, any improvement is a result, but, much more important is the fun I had fooling around with them, thanks.
