Form and Function

By digicammad
Sometimes compromises have to be made between how something looks and how it works, well not in this case. This corkscrew is not only a superb tool, it has beautiful form too. I hope I have been able to bring that out in this shot.

Laid on a black backcloth, lit from above with a halogen anglepoise and the shadows deliberately kept low.

This is one of those rare occasions when I was perfectly happy with the shot straight from the camera, not even the white balance or curves have been tweaked.

I hope you like it but, if you don't, feel free to point out its' flaws, all advice and critique welcome as ever.

Seriously good photograph this Ian. Simple but very effective (like the corkscrew come to think of it!)
Vision and technique outstanding - deserves to do very well on the old "clickometer"

A stunning shot Ian the highlights over the sweeping design curves really bring it to life IMO.

I believe this to be one of the best still life and abstract I have seen since joining this mag, and straight from the camera.

From the thumbnail I was expecting a stylised female portrait, this was quite a surprise! Nicely conceived and shot, the lighting is wonderful.

Brilliant shot, just love the colours and shapes. You have certainly brought out something in this corkscrew. Once again superb work and a well deserved HC, well done!

Lighting and what the tool is/does makes this an excellent shot.

Thanks again all.

Lord Nikon, if you were expecting a naked woman and weren't disappointed then that is a compliment indeed! :0)

Sorry for delay Ian. I love the shapes and the way you've emphasised the edges to a subject that most wouldn't even consider photographing. You've made it look really sexy. The highlights, however, are too bright and lack detail, which lost it points.

Thanks for the explanation Pete, much appreciated. Must admit I was struggling with the highlights, although as to detail it's a totally smooth satin surface so a bit limited.

Only thing I would say is that your background is slightly visible in the larger version, but that really is just nitpicking... It's a cracking shot, and reminds me almost of some car shots - great lighting and emphasis on the smooth curves.

Nice work, lovely lighting. Job done.
