The Great British Summer!

By Dilys
Taken at the Battle Proms at Ragley Hall, Warwickshire. Despite the heavy rain at times it did not spoil the evening. We were lucky in as much as the rain stopped for the Spitfire Display and the fireworks.

Flown by Carolyn Grace, once the world's only female spitfire pilot, the Grace Spitfire is a common sight at airshows around the UK.

After seeing active service in World War Two, Supermarine Spitfire ML407 was used in the film "Battle of Britain". Spitfire ML407 was originally built as a single seat fighter, and saw out the last months of World War Two, including D-Day. After the end of the war she served with six squadrons until in 1950 she was converted to a two seater trainer. Used as a trainer until 1960, she was sold to a museum, where she was disassembled and stored.

In 1979 Nick Grace bought the Spitfire and began restoring it. The project was finally completed in 1985, when ML407 flew again on April 16th and became a regular feature at airshows around the country.

Tragically, Nick Grace was killed in 1988 in a car accident. Rather than dispose of the plane, Carolyn Grace, his wife, learned to fly the Spitfire. In 1990 she gained solo certification, and in 1991 her display permit. Since then the Grace Spitfire has been a regular on the display circuit
