War memorial

By Djemde
Now, I walked into this strange little building in Berlin which was now a memorial to the war dead. The interior is modelled on the Pantheon in Rome. No one was there apart from a security guard and felt a bit conscious taking a photo in such a setting of calm. Very suprised by the results, technically bad as the light (sunlight from the hole in the ceiling) has completely bleached out, however I really like the effect it gives, kind of lighting up the rest of the scene. No manipulation, and funnily enough I think if I'd've used correct exposures times it wouldn't have the same results. Hope you like it, best viewed large.

Excellent composition to the one Jem. In reality its is the lighting that is the winner, making the simple composition possible.

Hi Jem,one of those photos that needs this kind of atmosphere, dense, morose and yet giving and so thick you could cut it with a knife.Wonderfully composed and the feeling of lonliness and being at one with his thoughts and the feeling of just being is a brilliant one.I think it has been really well done.Take care.AnnSmile

When I saw the thumbnail I thought that light was a large spot lamp in the foreground.
If you had wanted to keep the exposure balanced between in and out youd prolly have had to bracket a bit. Not wise in a place of mourning unless you can work fast and realise this is what you needed to do at the time. Then combine the images in some High Dynamic Range software. I like this how it is. Blue sky and clouds in that window may have brought an optimistic mood to the image, which probably wouldnt have been the right thing. So the exposure here is perfect. Its hard to tell what that light source is though at first...
Lonely and isolated, with a white halo of light. Great shot.

Thanks for your comments, I'm considering doing some further work on this, just to clone some of the stonework behind the light reflection. The light is from a hole in the ceiling, so i guess that means it's about 4.30pm. I agree with you, technicalities apart i love it. It's about mood.

Superbly powerful image. The light from the hole in the ceiling looks like a free floating spotlight set there on purpose to iluminate the statue.
Excellent work.
