The Pier

By dp
The weatherman says it could be a good sunrise so I drive the hour orso up to Southwold to find he was wrong. Actually, not so much wrong as about 2 hours out! Anyway I had just about given up with the pierand was moving off to the beach huts as the sky looked promising in the distance, when Terry, who is the manager of the pier, arrived for work and turned the lights on the near building. I decided to fit a ND filter to slow the exposure and take a shot of the pier rather than a sunrise with the pier in it, if you see what I am saying. The slow exposure and the grey conditions have worked rather well as a background to the main subject I feel.
Then again.... Wink

Shows that working in dull conditions can result in crackers like this.

Like the foreground in this the pebbles look very effective through the velvety water

The pier also looks very good the way it seems to go on and on, well composed

Thanks Sean. Its certainly not an original subject, its been photographed much better by others on here, Chriscj for one. I have never shot this viewpoint before though and was pleased with this considering the conditions.

I love this shot, especially the look of the sea, it's really quite spooky. Click. Jayne

6 comments and 26 clicks? If anything goes to show that a fine image can be made despite the lack of good light, then it's this. This rates up there with the best of this subject, Dave, not least because you've turned the poor light to your advantage by creating a soft, understated image that still has great levels of depth and interest. The interior lights are a great touch.

It's the composition and the exposure make this a winner Dave. I reckon B&W would look good too.

Chris

Weather has been rubbish all weekend, so I decided on night photography just to get out for a bit.

It's worked very well Dave, the light on the pier really makes this shot. Great photography.

Dave, total agree with your description. This is a great image of the pier made by the lights being on and the great timing to get the wave to brighten the foreground. 1st class,

Beautifully done - it takes real craft to produce an image like this when the light is against you.
