Autumn walk

By DRicherby
A simple and much-repaired farmer's fence, picked out by the light of the setting sun. The road it's beside is close to my house and crosses the border from Leeds to Bradford. The bottom of the hill, in Bradford, is signed 'Old Hollins Hill', which is also the name the Ordnance Survey uses; curiously, the Leeds end spells it 'Hollings'.

With my critique hat on, I spend a lot of time talking about white balance. Auto white balance corrects for what it thinks is the colour of the ambient light, and that's great for stopping indoor portraits looking like the Tango Man. It's not so good when the colour of the light is the whole reason for taking the shot. The rich, golden light of the late afternoon (well, mid-afternoon, this time of year; almost lunch time, really...) is one such case; sunset is another. Use daylight white balance to capture the light that your eyes see, rather than the light that the camera thinks you want to see.

I also advise people to check the histogram and the camera's overexposure warning to make sure that the highlights aren't blown. Doing that here led to a negative exposure compensation to keep the brightly lit parts under control and let the shadows fall into, well, shadow.

All comments and criticism welcome.

Dave.

Beautiful image and should be seen Large for the full effect.
Interesting comment about white balance as I am guilty of letting the Camera take care of it and only adjusting after the fact.

The colours are lovely and rich and when viewed large you have caught the texture and "well repaired" feel of the fence.

Great composition.

Cracking light and light the details and colours too. Interesting how something so simple can be transformed by the right light.
Good work.

Thanks for the mod, Lynne. Quite subtle, as it doesn't affect the fence very much but the effect on the trees is very nice.

Well, you shoot RAW so it doesn't matter so much. There's no difference between setting the white balance in the camera and in the RAW converter. In fact, I normally use auto and correct in the RAW converter if I need to but I shot this partly in mind of illustrating the point. Smile

I o love the sort of shot: what I call in my own terminology a 'limited landscape' where one homes in on a particular part of what might be a larger view. The exposure seems perfect, capturing the rich colours from the low sun. Lovely bit of photography.

Superb lighting in the centre and appears ( intential or not) to have a slight vignette . Super colours and a simple composition which works beautifully . One of your best IMO ....PhIL

Thanks, Phil. I did indeed vignette it but the two corners on the left were already very dark and the bottom-right was quite dark, too. So most of the effect was to bring the top-right corner into line with the others.

Has anyone noticed the spider's web? Smile

this is a very beautiful and natural capture of light and the way it plays with the surroundings, this makes for a very restful image which would be easy to live with on a wall, a window on nature

Ok, had to view large to see the spider's web...but it was worth it. I like the subtlety of the area behind the fence, the lovely lines of light that outline the fence, and your framing with the shrubs.

This is quite stunning - the light is exceptional. And you and I both know that it's all about light, right?
The other thing I notice here is the almost 3D look of this, which I think is caused by the central shallow dof, framed by the sharp trees - very special image.

You've kept that warm feel in lower light conditions. Very appropriate to the scene. Nice composition. I might have cropped the frame in a little on the right to use the tree as the edge of the frame. Like it Dave and interesting tech writeup to help us. paul
