The Sower

By DRicherby
The Sower is a 20ft bronze statue by Lee Lawrie, standing on the golden dome of the 34-storey tower of the Nebraska state capitol in Lincoln. As you can probably imagine, he symbolizes the importance of agriculture in the state; and he faces north-west, towards most of the state. The frieze below the dome depicts Native American thunderbirds.

We made the trip into town to photograph the capitol in the snow, some of which is just visible on the tower, if you look closely. I'll probably post a more general view of the capitol at some point. The snow that fell then, nearly a month ago, is still here, with plenty more on top of it. According to the news, this is the longest and most severe cold spell in the last 25 years. Forecast low for tonight is -33C, which would be within a degree or so of the record low. Brrrrrr. (Update: the temperature never got below about -20°C. Such accuracy in forecasting...)

All comments and criticism appreciated.

Dave.

Very nice capture. You have excellent clarity of tones and detail. I am always a sucker for a B&W capture and this is a good one.

Watch out for global warming, you might freeze to death. Smile

Superb Shot and a good write up - my Printing press shot was taken at ISO 1600, F5 @ 1/60th., knew I should have used my tripod for better dof and a slower shutter speed - thanks for pointing it out,

Superb mono of a wonderful looking building. Really enjoyed your write-up too. Many thanks for today's vote and comment. You have an eagle eye and it took me some time, even with your directions, to spot the little section I hadn't changed!

At first sight, he looked to me more like a footballer. I thought that was a leg sticking out, but I can see it's his hand, presumably spreading grain. Should have gone large....d'oh!!

Fabulous detail.

*laugh* I'd never seen it like that but, yes, it does look rather like his leg and he's doing a hop and a skip. Grin

Lovely to see a dramatic black and white architectural photograph, I like the contrast from brilliant white to deep blacks combined with the angle of the sun creates a three dimensional feel.

Was this handheld or on a tripod?? Just rotating the image left and maybe moving left to the building would have completed the centerline that divides the image leading to the bronze statue as it falls away slightly to the right at the moment.
