Under-foot (II)

By DRicherby
Sutro Baths in San Francisco is a fantastic location for photography. The baths were built in the mid-1890s, right on the seashore in a small bay not far from where the Golden Gate Bridge was later built. At the time, they were advertised as the world's largest indoor swimming pool complex — there was a fresh-water pool and six salt-water pools at various temperatures.

The baths eventually closed in the 1960s because of high operating costs and the building burnt down while it was being demolished in 1966. What remains now is the concrete foundations, including a few of the pools, which have been colonized by moorhens and gulls and are being slowly reclaimed by nature. The site is open to the public and there's lots of scope for photos of people walking along the poolside with the calm water of the pool in front of them and the Pacific Ocean crashing against the rocks just behind.

Since I'm obviously slightly unhinged, my favourite shot of the afternoon spent there was this one, which could have been taken in any car park in the country or even the world. And it was a grab shot taken as everyone else was heading to the car, with somebody else wanting to take our spot. So much for planning and use of the location...

All comments and criticism appreciated.

I can never see these patterns when I'm near them, and always kick myself afterwards when I see other photos - you've obviously got the reverse of that problem Wink

Ah Dave, wonderful patterns and texture and diagonal comp.
I've been to San Fran so many times, but my friends have not taken me to Sutro Baths. I think that has to be remedied!

the repeats and depth give this a good abstract look, the colour pops, and the mind dances with the optical effect, very pleasing combinations

I like it!
THe difference height can make to a shot is quite amazing. It is always good to look at things from different perspectives- especially in photography and I think you have captured a nice shot here.

Thye depth of field and vivid colours makes this a great shot.
well done
