Yellowstone (V)

By DRicherby
This is Jupiter Terrace, part of the Mammoth Hot Springs area in the north-west corner of Yellowstone, near the Montana border. The hill that forms the horizon was formed entirely by hot, mineral-rich water from the hot springs above depositing the mineral travertine as it cools. The springs vary in their flow but, in active years, the terraces can advance by as much as a couple of feet and boardwalks and even parts of buildings have been engulfed.

The orange colour here is those bacteria again. There's no major editing: the rocks really are that grey and the run-off channel really is that orange. And yes, while those of us in the UK might not remember it, the sky really is blue sometimes. Wink

All comments and criticism welcome.

Excellent shot Dave and in a lot of ways I prefer this to the previous one where the oraange and blue are offset by the almost mono rocks.
The bacteria makes a nice sweep, round and up the corner, but I can't help feeling I'd like a little more on the left to accentuate this and show more of the triangular outcrop?

Good point, Tim. I don't remember if there was any reason why I didn't pull out a bit to include more of where the orange swoosh was coming from and maybe crop to 16:9. We're looking south-ish, in the late morning, so it's possible that I was trying to avoid shooting close to the sun.

Wonderful tones across the image. I know you've said it's nauturally like it, if you hadn't I'd have wondered if you'd selectively coloured areas! Like the positioning of the tree.

I just read Barbara's comment and she stole my point about selective

I was just gonna say that it's so cool to get a shot like this where Nature lends it its own selective colouring.

Very well documented (and fascinating) geology, Dave.

It really looks like another world with the lack of colour in the rocks, that lone tree and the contrasting colour of sky and foreground orange. Superb composition.

Great shot, very detailed and crisp throughout with a good composition. I love the contrast of the amazingly blue sky against the grey/ white of the rocks. You once commented on one of my images, that it looked like a scene from a Dr Who episode, well I shall replicate that comment, as this could also be from Dr Who, as a desolate/ dying planet!

I see why you felt the explanation was needed, it does look rather like you've desaturated the rocks, & the right side of the shot.

Gosh, so that's what that "blue sky" stuff everyone talks about looks like? Smile

Yellowstone is a beautiful place to take in. I haven't been there yet with a camera but will try and plan a trip this summer.

You have done well with the presentation. You have an awesomely blue shy and love the contrasting color in this scene. Well done.

Thank you for taking the time to comment on my captures.

Stunning capture Dave. Crisp sharp detail and again superb textures. Love the way that Mother Nature has surpassed PS in converting the rocks to mono and replacing the sky with that azure blue - LOL!). I do however take Tim's point re showing more of the triangular outcrop on the LHS but this is for me still an exceptional shot.
