Yesterday, I was shooting for a model’s personal project. She’s in a job that is quite sensitive and so none of the pictures showing her face will ever appear here, or anywhere else except her private portfolio…
Her plan is to have pictures of her in her prime that she can look back on in 40 or 50 years, and remember herself as a sensual, sexual being, and that doesn’t seem a bad ambition. But given her job, it’s a project that involves a lot of trust, and she’s been highly selective in choosing photographers to work with, both in terms of their work, and their reputation. I’m honoured to be in that group.
Why would I be taking part in a project like this, if I can’t actually use many of the pictures? Well, for one thing, it’s fun: any collaboration with a purpose is positive. For another, I wanted to find out if I could deal with the images with suitable subtlety: to shoot images without a face that convey a character is a delightful challenge.
And… It’s always good to work with anyone who is challenging. I realise that Donald Trump and Boris Johnson won’t get this (but then they won’t be reading this blog) but it is really bracing to deal with people who don’t necessarily agree with you, who will put forward and argue for different ideas. My view is that the intellectually honest will thrive on this approach. But that’s just my view.
