Keep calm and carry on

Time for an update: I still use film, though. Not vast quantities, but I have a darkroom, and I'm not afraid to use it.

I enjoy every image I take: I hope you'll enjoy looking at them.

There are some hazards to photographing nudes in a public place, but they’re not necessarily the ones you imagine… Passers-by are always interesting (as in: ‘may you live in interesting times’) but not necessarily a problem. On one occasion, a model standing on top of a concrete blockhouse in a Derbyshire wood was utterly ignored by the female dog-walker who happened by. So were two photographers. Oblivious? So embarrassed she couldn’t speak or break pace? I’ll never know.

As a photographer, you need to step forwards and engage in conversation, while the model lies flat behind the nearest cowpat or bracken clump. Act as if you have all the time in the world, and there is no by-the-hour clock ticking away in the background (and specifically, hidden behind the second cowpat on the right). You’re here shooting the beauties of nature, which is perfectly true, if a tad misleading.

Yesterday, it was a chap who asked me to shoot a video clip with his mobile, while he encouraged his two companions to join in with his enthusiasm for walking in Warwickshire. I think we may have featured in a blog by now: at least a mobile is not in any way threatening.

Unlike, for instance, the dog in the cage inside a white van I encountered a few years back: the models were round the back of the farmhouse when the van (which we’d heard approaching down the track with the locked vehicle barrier). The driver was making a periodic check on the deserted farmyard where we’d been shooting – I think I convinced him that the old machinery was photogenic. I reckon the bloke could, as they say, handle himself, shaven head and all – and probably knew what to do with whatever was in the 45-inch canvas bag on his passenger seat.

Six years on from that, I’d glad to note that one of our pictures is now a Front Page Image on Purpleport – I think the three of us (and possibly mostly me) earned that! So much more exciting than the back garden (which isn’t much overlooked, as my portfolio may suggest). Though I have a kind offer from one model, should anyone ever be silly about things, to come along and… shock them into silence, shall we say?

From the top: Alicia Black, Nee Naaa and Amii, Ophelia Hart (staying clothed doesn't guarantee zero attention from passers-by: indeed, they feel more entitled to be looking) and Angel Price.
