There are positive consequences of being Guest Editor, as well as a requirement to spend time online. I’ve adopted the approach that dark_lord mentioned in a response to my earlier blog, and I look at the images full size, not just the thumbnails. After all, the job’s about identifying exceptional pictures, not outstanding ability to produce images that look good when seen tiny!
This is a heavy, repetitive task, even with rapid broadband. It takes time to move to the next one, and centre the image so that it’s all visible. And in some cases – the previous blog suggested reasons – the game isn’t worth the candle. There are a few shots on this site that I’d delete – or at the least, would never post anywhere!
There’s a bonus, as well. I find pictures I wouldn’t have seen in the normal course of things, and if I like them, I vote for them before moving on. Just that I’m chasing excellence doesn’t prevent me enjoying less good and still attractive images along the way. I may find that I end up following more people on here, and I am certainly voting for more pictures than usual.
That brings up the old ‘mates’ issue: while I’m confident that I never give my own user awards just because I correspond with or have met someone, it’s become clear to me that I have generally voted for pictures by people I know when they’re marginal. I may stop doing that as a result of this week, which is probably a good thing in the cosmic picture. Sorry, chaps and chappesses.
OK – I’m off now. I shall be reading a book, and looking at printed pictures, as well. Or should I listen to the radio and rest my eyes?
