Time for an update: I still use film, though. Not vast quantities, but I have a darkroom, and I'm not afraid to use it.

I enjoy every image I take: I hope you'll enjoy looking at them.

I wrote, a couple of years back, about a local business that has flourished for a decade, and which is very dear to my heart – Ag Photographic, founded by Matt Wells. I’m a fairly regular visitor to their premises, and have had the privilege of seeing behind the scenes at what is, essentially, a mail-order business.

Chatting with Matt last time I was on the premises, we started talking about blogs, and he asked me if I was interested in writing for the Ag blog. The first result is on their website, and deals with exposure – particularly the way that film is more demanding than digital.

I spent a good deal of my younger life trying to be the same person at work and at home, in all the contexts where I interact with people – I found that it was harder than I’d expected, because people often have expectations that – for instance – loyalty to an employer will be stronger than commitment to the truth.

With more years has come more relaxation with who I believe myself to be, and I find it easier to be the self that I want to be, rather than the angry young man that I know I was. Part of growing up has been learning when to keep quiet a bit more, and when to make links.

I hope, if you look at the Ag blog, that you’ll find it interesting, and that (again, if you can be bothered) you will be glad to find that there are still enterprising and enthusiastic people running distinctive and photographically-orientated businesses if you look at the article about Matt.

The image is my local canal bridge, photographed on a roll of Foma Retropan 320. Interesting stuff - maybe not a challenge to FP4+, but worth using if you come across a few rolls at a decent price... Much more interesting in its own, specially-formulated developer, by the way.

Funnily enough a few days ago I had a look on their website. I remember they have a limited selection of films, less than Analogue Warehouse & Lomography. After the demise of my local Jacobs shop (ages ago) I buy the bulk of film from the net...

Thanks for sharing your personal perspective, John. I agree - age gives greater wisdom and serenity. If only we could have just those two gifts of aging without fatigue and affliction. Bob

Pablo - the focus at Ag Photographic is on supplying reliable materials reliably, for the most part. And their prices are good, i think - the focus is on supplying a core of people who are still using film in quantity, rather than selling to hipsters who are dabbling (which seems to be the focus of Lomography and similar enterprises). The market's big enough for both, and - big plus - a lot of the people at Ag are actual users of the products they sell, and were before they worked there.
