I realised, a few days into shooting again, and running workshops, that I was feeling tired and almost unwell by the end of four hours in a studio. Now, I’m past retirement age and not the world’s fittest man, but…

And then I realised that in the current heat wave, it’s really easy to forget the basics if you’re busy: simple things like drinking plenty of water… So I started working at it, and aiming for a couple of litres of fluid intake during the four hours. Surprise, surprise, I have stopped having the unwelcome symptoms I was suffering.

And I wonder if – as we all start to return to shooting – if we all need a similar reminder about taking care of the basics, the housekeeping of photography. Little things like using a tripod for long exposures, cleaning lenses and sensors, remembering to put the lens hood on the RIGHT way round. (I note that the competitors in Master of Photography don’t always do anything with the magnificent rectangular Leitz hoods on their lenses… And a plastic hood is every bit as good for protecting a lens as a UV filter.)

All those things that we meant to do during lockdown, like cleaning the camera bag, or backing up your digital files… If you’re not busy tomorrow, you know what to do now!
