Yorkshire Sculpture Park

Time for an update: I still use film, though. Not vast quantities, but I have a darkroom, and I'm not afraid to use it.

I enjoy every image I take: I hope you'll enjoy looking at them.

I rounded off a four night stay in Calderdale with a visit to the Yorkshire sculpture park on the way home. My wife and I agreed to go before we left Hebden bridge and I booked the tickets with my mobile phone. I hate booking things on my mobile!

It’s sort of started to go wrong as we turned in at the entrance when it started to snow, fortunately briefly. When we got to the car park, my wife wasn’t feeling terribly well and opted to stay in the car while I went and explored.

The snow had stopped, but the rain persisted for most of the hour before I decided to head back for shelter. I actually got to look at about half a dozen pieces of sculpture, and I got a good hour’s walk as a result, so the £6.00 entrance fee wasn’t bad value. But I have learned lessons for a return visit later in the year!

First of all travel light: this is not the place for being fully equipped, and I shall strip down to a couple of lenses and a spare battery. And rather than adding the visit on in the afternoon, I shall plan to spend four or five hours there, so that I can explore a decent proportion of the place. I might take a good look at the weather forecast is well.

Anyway, I’m back in circulation, and there will be at least a couple more blogs in the next week. Be seeing you!

Focus scales

If you’ve been taking pictures since before autofocus arrived, you’ll be very familiar with focus scales – they are one of the primary controls on an old-school camera, and just one more of the things that you really needed to get right. With autof...

Porcelain processing

People commented on the look in my last post and it seems like a good idea to share the secrets for Christmas. I learned the technique several years ago: a model’s boyfriend told me about it, and a website that described it in detail: I tried it, l...

You develop your own films don’t you?

If you have your own darkroom, or if you use film cameras regularly, there are always a few people who mention the attic. As in ‘Grandpa’s cameras are in the attic. I don’t even know if they have film in them!’ This leads me to ask if I can have a l...

Choose your pond

There’s an old saying about being a big fish and a little pond. Do you want to be the most important person in a small organisation, or are you content being a relatively small cog in a big machine? It’s the same in photography. With relatively mo...

Graduated filters

This is for Hannah, and anyone else who has come across the casual way that a lot of togs talk about one or two types of filter that landscaper photographers use a lot: graduated filters and neutral density filters. A graduated filter is one that i...

I do like the sculpture park ,but as you say - it is a day trip rather than a 'pop in' sort of place

Four or five hours minimum, John. And be prepared for legs to stiffen and feet to ache. But it's a fabulous facility for photographs with a really good café!

It is on my list to visit this year, postponed for reasons we all know too well!

So sorry the weather played up in Calderdale for your stay - I did mention to bring waders didn't I?! Wink

I don't think waders figured, but I took a surplus of sweaters... And 'good' weather can be boring!
