Thoughts of summers past

By dudler
This is a shot through the racquet held by the statue of Dorothy Round in Dudley Park, shot last summer with an infrared-converted camera. My daughter took great delight in showing me the statue, because she knew that it would remind me of my mother, who was a keen tennis player all her life (she played with friends four or five days before she died at the age of 82).

Miss Round was Wimbledon Ladies' Champion in 1934 and 1937, and was born in Dudley in 1909.

I've called today's blog Too smooth by half. You'll have to read it to find out why.

With a tennis racquet like that no wonder why she missed first place in 1935, 1936, 1938 and 1939. I suppose the sculptor thought that chicken wiring does not cut it for SW19 servicing.

Ace shot dudler!

I doubt if the sculptor had the guts to put strings in the racket !

A great view point for the shot, in more ways that one, and a great write up, John.
A smashing upload all round.

I like how you have included the tennis court through your racquet frame. However, no strings attached?

Well composed and edited photo John and a nice description. Not sure about the dark red stripe across the top (part of the frame?)

Nicely composed shot and story John. I may have been tempted to clone out the floodlight.
It draws the eye away from the view of the tennis court through the racket.
Just did a very quick mod, to see if it helped. Not sure that it did Blush

A really good and very different POV, although I wouldn't have known it was a Tennis racquet if I hadn't read your description.

A lovely reminder of your mother - game gal playing tennis to the last.
Is Dudley the source of your avatar?

I think I kind of saw the lights as balls in flight...

Kate - no, it isn't: it comes from my surname!

Viewing the modern day tennis courts through Miss Round's racket is very befitting, she would approve.

Stay safe,
