Why do I like this? Let me count the ways?

By dudler
Well, it ticks the Saturday shadows box, for starters. Lighting by IKEA, giving lots of light and shade with an Isbrytare spotlight.

Homemade pinhole lens, from the time I realised that an electronic viewfinder and high ISO allowed me to shoot handheld pinholes. I made the one I used here from a Minolta 35-70 zoom that disintegrated: I removed the lens elements that hadn't already fallen out, and put some aluminium foil over the front. Quick pinprick, and sorted - and a longer focal length than using a body cap with a hole in it.

And a wonderful side-effect of the pinhole: my model, Vicky, is not really identifiable as an individual, but starts to represent all women.

Not to mention the fact that this doesn't seem to need sharpness to work, which is always nice as a counter to the 'more quality is better' view.

I hope you like it, too.

When dappled light creates its own forms and structure. Love this.

These days sharpness tends to be overrated, I think. Softness is all in this photo.

As much as most don't realize we use this light stuff to create our art in many different ways, as in your image painted and controlled, i doesnt know much about this technical stuff but I know what I likes...John

Great photo John. The light, shadows and soft grainy image add to a lovely portrait of a mysterious woman lost in her thoughts.
Even the little blemish on her arm doesn't matter.

It certainly disguises the identity of the lady and reduces her to a vague image of womanhood. Is she old or young or does it matter? The graininess also adds to the mystery.

Wonderful stuff. And, as I've intimated before, it's really refreshing to see the work of someone who doesn't believe an unsharp image is necessarily a bad thing. Your image today demonstrates that in spades.

Beautiful...
It is sort of like gesture poses in figure drawing classes, John.
