I think I have managed to create an image which combines photography and art. I'm not too sure where this will lead me, but I'm enjoying the ride! What I would like to hear from you is whether this is still regarded as photography, and if it is, what is it categorized as. I just call it art photography, but am uncertain of this name! I'm rather isolated where I live, with no access to photography clubs or people with similar interests. I have never attended any courses or had discussions with other photographers. Getting feedback from you guys really help me to follow my dream, which is, probably like all other photographers, to create that one image that will make you feel that you have finally reached the impossible. I do not use Photoshop to edit my photos, but shoot in Raw, then crop and make fine adjustments in Dxo Optics Pro 10. If necessary I will enhance lighting effects in Oloneo Photo Engine. I try to keep the final image as close to the original as possible.
Thank you for all the help and advice I have received from you during the past few years.

Beautiful image, I call it digital art which is very clever what people can do with an image, personally I only crop and adjust the levels on my images keeping as original as possible, but well done. Ted. GrinGrin

Another great image Bernard.

I understand how you feel as I do a lot of this myself. I no longer call myself a photographer, just a picture maker as the camera shot is just the start of the picture's journey. Which like you I allow the picture to take me. I have always said shot for yourself and if others like them it's a bonus.

Wonderful pictures just keep doing what you are, it works.

This is quite hard to critique in the conventional sense for many images in this gallery as it's highly individual abnd a lot of personal preferences come into play.

However, there is one thing I'd change .
The white line on the right hand side becomes more annoying to me as I view longer. If it didn't reach to the base of the image it wouldn't be so bad but it keeps drawing my attention and I don't think it adds to the overall composition. It's at odds with the flowers which are floating nicely against the background. So either remove it or make it like the pillar on the left. That, I thin, would make it more pleasing to view.

Other than that I really like this.

This is a real beauty, Bernard.

I think that what you do can be called Floral Collage Art, but the photography aspect could be considered to be Floral Still Life.
Yes, it is photography, as is Still Life Photography.

You make pictures rather than take them. It's more like painting, in that you start out with an empty canvas and the subject matter has to be built up from scratch. You can manipulate background, lighting, angle, and composition so you can literally ‘draw’ what you like. Tripping the shutter is the last step in a time-consuming process that may take anything from a few hours to several days.

You say that you do make some adjustments to the final picture, but I don't consider it to be Digital Art, which is primarily computer generated.

I assume the flowers used are real and fresh, and therefore the photography side is necessary in order to capture the work you have done, and that picture will then never fade and die, though your work may.

I found some interesting similar work on the internet, but nothing quite like your own. HERE is an interesting one.

Pamela.

PS: I read your "About" page and was interested to read about where you live.

Thank you Ted, Robert, Dark Lord and Pamela. Your comments are all highly appreciated. A special thank you to Pamela for helping me to make more sense as to what I'm doing. Regards. Bernard.
Pamela, the town I live in is called Jozini. My wife teaches at the local primary school while I keep myself busy with running a small nursery from home, as well as my photography. Presently we are in the grip of a severe drought and finding flowers are not easy. Many of the flowers I use are pressed flowers.

I don't know what the definition of art is, but I know what I like...

I'm slightly wary of claiming that anything is 'art' - a good way to start fights, and it can seem like claiming to be more than one is. Similarly with many other definitions that are not technical and obviously clear and straightforward. From the other direction, if a camera is involved at soem stage, or photographic materials, or even a scanner, it is soem sort of photography. The definition only matters for competitions that restrict things - and they will have their own definitions...

'Creative' is safer, at least a bit!

I wonder whether some sort of description involving the word 'hybrid' would work - or is that too techie and general?

One of my favourite children's books is about a panda who travels the world to find out if he's black with white patches, or white with black patches. When he gets home, he decides that he is a bear who makes music with a flute. And that is far more important.
