Darmstadt, Forest Cemetery (lead and V1)

By EveLine1
Built in 1914 this cemetery is built in the classic (traditionalist) style. Many of Darmstadt's dignitaries are buried here, among others members of the Merck (pharmaceutical company) family with whom my family has ties (but not close enough to make a difference Wink).

As always thanks for your comments and votes yesterday for my 'Brambles series. And to Richard for his most welcome award!

All my best,
Viola

The past and the present, shadows and light, with empty space between them. This is thought-provoking.
Now why does Darmstadt say something to me? Something nagging at my brain...

An excellent b&w study, Viola.

We do not have many cemeteries with such elaborate entrances except for those in the biggest cities. This one is a big surprise!

Have a lovely weekend Smile

Thank you so much Moira for your award so hugely apprecated! There are different reasons you might know Darmstadt for: the most recent history includes the institution of ESA (European Space Operation Center, several satelites habe been launched from here), Darmstadt has one of the best and most wellknown Technical Universities. Going back further Darmstadt was one of the most heavily hit cities in the second world war (strategic train junction, etc, and important industries like Merck, Schenk, Goebel) and one of the main centres of the German Art Nouveau. The highest ranking noble in the state of Hessen was the Grand Duke of Hessen-Darmstadt. The last Czarina was Alexandra of Hessen-Darmstadt. She was a grandchild of Queen Victoria (her mother was Princess Alice from whom she inherited hemophilia which then was pased on to her son the tsarevitch). So a town with lots of history. Darmstadt's new theater was built 1972 and apparently was one of the most expensive theaters ever built. Does any of that ring a bell?

Thank you Bill, you too!! Our family grave is on the older cemetary from the 1830s. Although it is actually huge it got too small with the wars (sigh!!) and that is why this 'Forest Cemetary' built outside the city limits was planned. 1914 the year they started building it was the beginning of WW1 (so they foresaw large numbers of casualties.. there are sections reserved for French, Russian, Italian soldiers. It really is lovely because it is so spacious and has many trees (and squirrelsSmile) it even has an area for socalled tree burials.

Actually it's the ESOC in Darmstadt (European Space Operations Centre), the control center of Esa.

I think it's Tsarina Alexandra who was creeping out of the depths of my memory. Thanks for the history.

ESA is what springs to mind for me, and the radioactive element Darmstadtium Smile

You are right of course with the radioactive element. I hadn't thought of that. One of the new buildings of the university built across from the Renaissance palace, right next to the museum and former theater (built respectively in the early 1900s and 1816) has been named Darmstadtium.. The angular, building is a sore to my eyes because it is an absolute break with everything built in the corner but apparently the town is proud of it..
