Cone Head Mantis

By fishiee
Thanks to all for the comments and votes on my last upload and special thanks to marktc for the GEA and Alan Baseley's UA.

Unfortunately today was not a good day for me. After 5 happy years together my canon 50D looks to have gone to a better place, it's final shot a nice open winged Adonis Blue this morning. It has expired hot on the tail of my Sigma 150 Macro lens that died in the spring and my PC that died in July, so it has been an expensive few months!

Pretty bad timing for the 50D as I am going on Holiday next Saturday, same day that the 7DII is supposed to be revealed, which was the camera I was kind of holding out for, and now I am deciding whether I buy a 70D this week as a stop gap or contemplate going on holiday without a camera for the first time ever and wait and see if the 7DII is that much better. I think I'll probably I'll have to plump for a 70D short term. Bit of a bummer!!

Anyway, in the meantime, here is the image I had prepared last night for uploading. A rather impressive Cone Head Mantis from Provence last spring. I'd only ever had a fleeting glimpse of one once before a few years previously, but last year I found a couple that were the perfect models so I really went to town with them. They were my highlight of 2013 Smile

Now off to research lots and probably spend lots! Sad

Sorry your camera has died - I know the feeling!!! Sad (My S3 died a few weeks ago, I can't justify the expense of replacing it so am now using my compact!).

This is a wonderful image - what a beautiful creature!! I'll swap all the UK spiders for a few mantis! Grin

Amazing how it has found a flower that resembles him so much. Maybe that's why he's there. It sure is a fabulous image and so deserving of the awards. Hope all goes well with the buying you're about to do.

This is an excellent photograph of an amazing creature. I am still trying to work out which bit is the head - ok, it must be the bit furthest from the legs.

A fantastic close up of this amazing insect, it is brilliantly cameouflaged, you must have the eyes of a hawk to spot this!
