Grizzled Skipper

By fishiee
Definitely the coldest butterfly I've ever photographed! Grizzled Skipper from early May this year. When I got out of the car it said just +2C and there was a heavy frost on the ground when we reached the main site. I'm not sure if the water droplets on the wings were frozen at the time!

Once the sun came out and things warmed up (Including my hands which were blocks of ice!) the place was alive with butterflies. I don't think I'd ever seen so many Dingy/Grizzled Skippers and Green Hairstreaks in my life as I did that day.

Thanks. They tend to always roost on dead seed heads like this for camouflage but once you get your eye in they are quite easy to spot Smile

A real stunner John, very impressive at such an incredibly slow shutter speed.
