Marbled White Butterfly Emerging

By fishiee
Something I've put together for one of my camera club competitions and thought it was worth putting on here for something different.

First time I've ever witnessed a butterfly emerging before. Found lots just after they have pumped up their wings, but never one in the process. The left most image was just after I found the freshly hatched butterfly which must have clambered up me while I was photographing another fully fledged Marbled White as I flicked what I assumed was a spider off my neck only to see it was this!

I put it on this seed head in the hope I'd not damaged it as it was very soft and delicate, and the time from the leftmost image to the right hand fully emerged (though still with very soft wings) was about 25 minutes. For a long time it's wings looked very much like the middle image and I feared they were damaged but thankfully all seemed to be ok! Smile

I loads of images of the process and it was interesting to notice afterwards when reviewing these images that some of the flower/seed head was opening as well during the process. I could watch those pale green parts 'grow' as I browsed through the sequence!

I found another very shortly afterwards in a similar state to the middle image, but could see it had been there like that all night as it had dew over it's eyes, so it was never going to be able to open its wings properly and fly Sad

Thought I'd make use of the panorama image option to display all three shots in one rather than having to flick through variants which seems a bit fiddly sometimes, especially on a smart phone!

Now I want to see this with a dragonfly or damselfly!
