Dereliction and desertion

By Focus_Man
Heswall beach on a quiet day.

This is a west Wirral area and is in actual fact on the River Dee. A well silted up river, with a small channel dredged close to the Welsh coast. It is very marshy and we photographers get our feet muddy if not totally wet.

Jolly good photograph, but what a sad sight.

Hi Frank,

Exposure is spot on, the subject is attractive, however a couple of things pop out for me.

Theres some evidence visible of post processing work done on this, and Ive pointed them out in mod 2.

The sky has a slightly mottled appearance, with some red mixed with blue; I only noticed this at 200%, so I wonder if youve cropped from a larger image? Using Noise Reduction smooths the sky, - though it not actually luminance noise, more like chroma noise, but still not quite that either.

Its not composed with the horizon on a third, and I know youve done this to keep the boats as focal points, - adding sky makes it look odd. So I wonder if this shot is the one that proves the rule, and a crop with the horizon in the middle, more of a pano crop suits it better?

Hope this helps,

Hi Frank, - I am generally disappointed by the results from the Topaz filter, - I find it introduces problems, - so that may well be what happened here.

Just caught up with this one, I like the composition on this and I think it works well. Again I've done a mod overlaying a B&W copy with the colour and then reducing the opacity to 47%, I think it gives the foreground boat a bit of punch (maybe just in my eye's) also two gradients to the sky, first one the colour blue from the sky and added "Modify" and opacity reduced and the second one in black with "soft Light" and again reduced opacity.

Frank tell the wife that I liked the flower mod you did the other day Grin
