La Linea at night

By Footski
A quick shot, taken through a hotel window of the town next to Gibraltar. Handheld, it shows Algeciras in the background with the lights of the oil refinery. I pressed the camera lens against the glass to hold it as steady as possible.

The sort of image that justifies my faith in spontaneity over planning. Look at all the reasons there are for it to go wrong... Taken through glass... Hand-held for nearly a second... And it has worked. Exposure is good, composition is really satisfying, with lines curving up to the right and then circling round the other side of the bay.

The only thing that jars slightly is the very short length of the light trails from vehicles, they look cut-off. A longer exposure, on a tripod, with continuous light trails flowing up that road - now that would be strong!

Meanwhile, well done!

Moira,
You humble me. Thank you. I would love to go back with a tripod, but booking the hotel is easier than booking the night sky!!

I like all the different aspects in this, the dark background with spots of light, the brighter foreground with traffic trails, the subtly coloured sky, and the deep blue water, all combining to make a good night shot. It's good to shoot when there is still some nice colour in the sky.
The low ISO has given the image good quality, and the street lights were bright enough to give you a good exposure.
Pamela.
