Wanna fight?

A preying mantis happily posed for me in the garden. Got the shot with my Nikon D7000 and a big Sigma lens.

Actually very good with that lens. Close up, not macro of course. The white foreground is just a little insistant and you needed to focus on the head. The back of the body is sharper than the head and it must be the head that is sharp. You could get away with ISO400 which would have allowed you to go down two more stops, thus increasing depth of field.

You are better working at f8 to f11 anyway to get the best from most lenses. I'm assuming a tripod. I know that lens has an OS system, but I wouldn't trust is for critical sharpness at this magnification.

You are of course spot on with your analysis. Thank for it. Focussing was not easy as I was using a tripod and the little fighter did keep moving, albeit slowly. I forgot to mention that I managed to put a large piece of coloured card behind it to avoid a distracting background.
I did learn much during this particular exercise.

You deserve some sort of prize taking the shot of such a tiny insect with a 500mm lens! You experienced the type of issues one would expect, - its very difficult for the lens to resolve very fine detail. Its a good effort though, and Im sure a smaller aperture and faster shutter would hve been an advantage.
