I think this would work better with a slightly wider angle, to include the books that are presumably in front of him. Some would argue that the background explains the shot, but I didn't really get it until I read the explanation.

The context comes over quite clearly for me. I like the expression you've captured, it conveys character, thought. 'Shall I splash out? Have I got this one already? Will I actually read it?...'
