Cape stone chat (Saxicola torquata)

By fotobee
Tulbagh South Africa. A Stone chat, (Saxicola torquata) which I caught in full flight, on one of our early morning walks to the local farm dam. This male was hawking insects, which are not visible in this photo, but may be seen in Moebee`s upload of a few days ago, "Breakfast has arrived". This is due to the trade-off of having a 600 mm lens as opposed to a 500 mm one. These shots happen so fast that nobody has time to change anything, but just have to grab them as they present themselves, with the lenses pre-set. Both of us were within a few feet of each other. The difference between the two lenses is considerable, the effective focal length being 750 mm (for the 500 mm) as opposed to the 600 mm, effective length being 900 mm. To get the same effective depth of field, I have to stop the 600 mm lens down to f10, while the 500 mm one is set to f7.1. With both camera`s (Identical Nikon D7100`s), set at ISO 1600 (The point where both ISO`s recover to about ISO 320). The DOF , although similar at the same focus point, falls off much more on either side, on the larger lens. In addition, the shutter speed with the 600 lens is 1/6400, as opposed to Moebee`s speed of 1/8000, which also blurs the fast moving mosquito sized insects. Both factors are enough to render them virtually invisible to the longer lens, while enabling a sharp resolution on the smaller lens. (Note...the insects were invisible to the naked eye). Both lenses are equally useful.
Thank you everyone, for looking, voting and commenting on my "Bushel of Bishops". Have an excellent Sunday. Regards Martin
