Karoo Desert Garden. We went here yesterday, not expecting much yet in the way of wild flowers, seeing that it was about two month`s early. What we were not expecting to see, was the whole Garden (about +- 25 square km of wild area) was aflame with the blooms of the Bushman`s Quiver tree (A large aloe species) which grows into a substantial tree about 4 meters high, with stems about 750 mm thick. The ends of most of the abundant branches carried the typical spikes of bright yellow Aloe flowers. These are the main nectar food supply for all the insect and nectar drinking species of wildlife found here, including the Lesser Double Collared Sunbird (Nectarinia chalybea), shown here. These birds are very wary of predators, particularly the Laniers Shrike, or Butcher bird, which were everywhere. I managed to capture this bird, at extremely long range with the 500 (750 mm effective DX sensor) Sigma telephoto lens, but, as you can see, it was keeping a very wary eye on me, and soon flitted away! They are like jewels of the bushveldt, and are truly amazing to see!

Have a wonderful week, and open your eyes to the beauty that surrounds you all. Thanks for taking the trouble to look.
