Off Camera

By freyjas_dad
Hi all, got myself a flash and trying to learn a bit of off camera techniques.

A very basic set up, flash off to left shooting through a home made diffuser at 1/8 power and zoomed to 105mm with a flag to stop to much hitting the roof slates. A gold reflector to warm up was just out of shot to the right.

Curves adjusted and smart-sharpened.

Any crit welcome, looking to learn, thanks in advance!

Nicely done, I've only 2 minor comments, one is the join of the slate, could you have hidden it behind the bottle more and the reflection of the diffuser in the bottle to the left of the label, perhaps tone it down in PS or use another flag.

Excellent shot and still life arrangement. For me, the only thing letting this down ever so slightly is the background. I'd clone out the nail hole in the slate and would be tempted to apply some gaussian blur to the slates too to soften them ever so slightly - just a few thoughts, mind from a landscaper who really knows very little about such shots.

It's not a bad effort at all. A criticism of the lighting is that the light is too much of a point source. The diffuser needs to be much closer to the set up in order to make the highlights more diffuse on the bottle.
It is very sharp, and maybe a rustic still-life could benefit from a little softness, and if you turn the slate with the hole the other way round, the problem goes away.

I'd like to see a nice wedge of crumbly cheese on this too, but then I always like a nice piece of crumbly cheese! Tongue

All minor things, but attention to detail is everything with a set up still life.

Thanks Nick, will have to work on the diffuser, its as close as I could get, maybe I'll try and upgrade it with another couple of layers of greaseproof!

I'll try again tonight, just have to get another bottle Smile

I got one...and some cheese!!

As for the diffuser, is it attached to the light? If so, you can leave it in place and add another much closer to the subject. This will bring the light levels down, so you might need to move the light closer as well. Experimentation is so easy with digital. Making notes is also helpful for future reference on set ups.
