Gold Relics Squared

By hwatt
Salen, Mull, Scotland

Three old wooden wrecked boats have been hauled up on the edge of the Salen estuary to rot slowly away. They have been there a surprising amount of time exposed to the elements yet remaining largely intact. I elected to shoot them shortly after sunrise driving from a nearby campsite and was greeted by the most extraordinary conditions which blossomed and matured into this melting pot of golden light streaming beneath low overhanging cloud and rain. It was stunning.

Fuji GFX50S, f/16 at 1/30 second, ISO 100, cropped to a square.

That has such a painterly feel to the image. Lovely work.

I like the colour palette in this, and how the light is catching the hull. A calming scene.

lovely composition and beautiful light; the square crop increases the tranquillity and restfulness of the scene. Excellent photo.

A most excellent study of these three battlers with time on the shores of the Sound Of Mull.
Their disintegration over the years would have made an interesting record. I believe they were drawn ashore in the mid-noughties. I last saw them in 2009 when they still (just about) carried their painted hulls, their cabins and with much of the metalwork associated with their former trade strewn around.
The site has clearly been tidied somewhat in the intervening years and has left the opportunity for this beautiful capture.
Lovely stuff.

Notice the wheel houses finally fallen in, every year I notice how they are slowly deteriorating, great image of them

I have seen these boats in photos many times but you have captured them with a great light. Well done and good work.
Stunning light and colour.

I've been watching these rot over the years each time I visit Mull. I've stopped and taken a few pops at them myself. Never come close to anything as visually appealing as this. Well done.
