Difficult place to shoot I found - too contained by the mountains - always heavy shadow somewhere - unless the sun's straight above.
You have a good sharp bright image though I have reservations resulting from my own use of the polarizor - which I think is a lot more difficult to gauge correctly than I first thought - I've almost decided to stop using the wretched thing. Am trying to learn more about when it's appropriate.
Here I feel it's just almost too 'vicious' - perhaps that's a little overstated but basically I think the polarizor has had an effect of making the the sky almost unreal ??
The Mountains themselves seem flat It looks as though the light is virtually perpendicular - probably just behind you ?? very little shadow!
Hope this doesn't sound too critical - gotta express what one sees
Hope you enjoyed your trip - it's a magical experience - photographers heaven.

Dave,
Thanks very much for the critique, I really appreciate it, and don't worry it's not too critial at all. Just what I wanted.
I did have a fantastic time on the west cost, inspired by your travels among other. However my biggest mistake was that in trying to fit so much in left myself with very little time at each location. Therefore so little time to actually enjoy the location. (After all I covered 3,000 miles in 2 weeks!)
You’re spot on about the time of day, and the impact on the light. I think that the shot was taken between 11:00 -12:30 (Don’t have the EXIF handy)
Again you’re right about the polariser, it helped with the colouration of the rocks and the foliage, but you end up with and overly saturated sky.
The only thing I would have to disagreed with you is that they’re not mountains, you’re actually looking at a cliff face
I think it’s a bit of a geologist’s thing because in all the literature at Zion they make a point of mentioning it, but they looked like mountains to me too.
Thanks again Dave.
Cheers,
Gary

Hi Gary. I saw your name on Paul's thread and had to see if you had put up anything new lately. Dave has some good points and I never use a polarizer except if I want to see into some water through a little reflective glare. And KeithH say he uses it for B&W's.
Yes Zion is really a canyon cut through a flat high prarie. After a while, there is so much erosion that the prarie is no longer there and all that remains are eroded 'mountians.'
Hope to see some new stuff from you soon. Where did you go?
Patrick

Hi Patrick,
Oh where did I go; too far to be honest!
The road-trip was around 3,00 miles in two weeks, all . Flew in to San Francisco, and drove to Half moon bay, then down Highway 1 until I got to Santa Monica, across LA to Palm Springs, then onto Scottsdale & Tucson. From that up north to Sedona, Grand Canyon, Monument Valley, Moab, Bryce, Zion & finally Vegas. All in a Hummer H2
Just love the West Coast U.S.A, so dramatic.
I'll be uploading again as soon as I rebuild my Photoshop machine, which unfortunately had a small problem and caught fire just before Christmas.
Thanks for taking the time to comment, appreciate it.
Cheers,
Gary
